Tiannanxing (Arisaema) Pictures Show Plant Form and Key Identification Points for the Medicinal Herb
Tiannanxing (Arisaema) is a perennial herb in the Araceae family. Its dried tubers can be used as medicine after processing, and it is one of the traditional Chinese medicinal herbs in common use. Most Tiannanxing pictures found online show the whole plant, leaves, inflorescence and tubers, and they are the most direct way to get to know this plant.
In pictures of the whole plant, the leaves of Tiannanxing are fairly large, often radially or pedately divided, and the number of leaflets varies with the species. At flowering time, the typical spadix inflorescence can be seen, with the spathe usually green or marked with purple stripes, wrapping around the spadix, giving it a very distinctive form. Tiannanxing from different growing areas differs slightly in leaf shape and flower color, and these details are worth noting when comparing pictures.
Medicinal herb pictures mainly focus on the tubers. Tiannanxing tubers are mostly oblate, with a nearly white or pale brown surface, a sunken stem scar at the top, and dotted fibrous root scars scattered around it; after slicing, the cut surface is white and rich in starch. It is easily confused with closely related medicinal herbs such as Banxia (Pinellia ternata) and Baifuzi (Typhonium giganteum), so it is best to judge by combining leaf and inflorescence photos.
Tiannanxing prefers a warm, humid environment and is mostly found growing wild in shaded, damp places such as under forest canopies and in ravines; it can also be cultivated artificially to obtain a stable source of medicinal material. It should be noted that raw Tiannanxing is toxic and must be properly processed before use according to its intended purpose. Never dig it up and take it on your own based only on pictures. When browsing Tiannanxing pictures, referring to written materials on cultivation techniques and processing methods at the same time will give better identification results.
