Tianmu viburnum is a deciduous shrub in the genus Viburnum, named for having been first discovered and recorded in the Tianmu Mountain area of Zhejiang. Today it is also widely distributed along mountain forest edges in Northeast China, North China, and the Southwest. Taxonomically, it is closely related to Viburnum sargentii, and in different sources the two are sometimes merged or treated as varieties, so the two names are often used interchangeably.

Its flowering period is mostly in late spring and early summer. The cyme inflorescence is quite distinctive: the outer ring consists of large white sterile flowers, while the center is dotted with tiny fertile flowers, looking from a distance like white butterflies encircling the branches. After autumn sets in, the fruit gradually turns bright red, hanging in clusters on the branches and contrasting with the green leaves. It is attractive both for its flowers and its fruit, and is often used as a landscaping accent in courtyards, parks, and along roadsides.

For care, Tianmu viburnum prefers a cool, humid, semi-shaded environment and is fairly cold-hardy. It is suitable for planting in deep, well-drained soil. Routine management is relatively undemanding: keep the soil moist during the growing season, and simply water appropriately during summer heat and drought. After flowering, spent flowers and overly dense branches can be pruned away, which keeps the plant's shape tidy and also benefits flowering the following year. Propagation is commonly done by seed or cuttings; with the right season and method, home growers can also achieve a good survival rate.

Besides its ornamental value, Tianmu viburnum also has a certain folk medicinal tradition. Its branches, leaves, and fruit are harvested and used in some areas, and it is generally believed to have effects such as dispelling wind and dampness and relaxing the sinews and invigorating the collaterals; specific applications should follow a doctor's advice. It should be noted that although its fruit is attractive in color, it is mainly for ornamental purposes and is not recommended for casual consumption.
