A Detailed Explanation of the Benefits and Uses of Tougucao: External Fumigation and Washing Is a Common Method
Tougucao is a commonly used herb in traditional Chinese medicine, named for its ability to penetrate the tendons and bones and relieve rheumatic pain. It comes from more than one plant source, and the species used medicinally vary from region to region; common ones include Zhenzhu Tougucao (Phryma leptostachya) and Fengxian Tougucao (Impatiens balsamina). The medicinal part is usually the dried whole plant or the aboveground portion, generally harvested in summer and autumn and dried in the sun for later use.
In terms of medicinal properties, Tougucao is pungent in flavor and warm in nature, with the effects of dispelling wind and removing dampness, relaxing the tendons and invigorating blood, and dispersing blood stasis and reducing swelling. Traditionally it is mostly used for rheumatic bone pain, soreness and weakness of the lower back and legs, contracture of the tendons and bones, and injuries from falls and blows. Precisely because its medicinal nature moves and disperses and can reach deep into the tendons and bones, it is often used among the people as a common remedy for treating tendon and bone pain.
In practical use, Tougucao is mainly applied externally. The most common method is to decoct it in water and then, while hot, fumigate and wash or soak the affected area. The residue can also be applied hot to the joints, and it can be decocted together with blood-invigorating and collateral-unblocking herbs such as mugwort leaf and safflower for washing to enhance the effect. In some areas, the fresh herb is also pounded into a paste and applied externally to relieve local swelling and pain.
When using Tougucao, note that whether to take it internally and the specific dosage should follow a doctor's guidance. Pregnant women and those with broken or ulcerated skin generally should not use it. When fumigating and washing, the water temperature should not be too high to avoid burns. If the skin develops a red rash, itching, or other discomfort, stop using it immediately and consult a physician to ensure medication safety.
