The Benefits and Uses of Ground Beetle: Breaking Blood and Dispelling Stasis, Reconnecting Sinews and Setting Bones
Ground beetle is one of the traditional animal-based medicinal materials, also known as the soil turtle or tuyuan, and is the dried female body of the insects Eupolyphaga sinensis or Steleophaga plancyi of the family Corydiidae. Its flavor is salty and its nature is cold; traditional Chinese medicine holds that it enters the liver meridian, and it is a commonly used medicinal material in traumatology, long valued by physicians.
In terms of effects, ground beetle is noted for breaking blood and dispelling stasis and for reconnecting sinews and setting bones. In traditional Chinese medicine it is mostly used for amenorrhea and abdominal masses and lumps caused by blood stasis, as well as for traumatic injuries, tendon and bone fractures, and stasis swelling and pain. In many traumatology formulas it is often combined with frankincense, myrrh, pyrite and other medicinal materials to help dissipate blood stasis and promote the recovery of sinews and bones.
In the past, ground beetle was mainly obtained by wild capture, but today artificial breeding technology is fairly mature, and some regions have formed a tuyuan breeding industry, making the source of the medicinal material relatively stable. When selecting, those with intact, plump, dry bodies free of impurities are preferred; during storage, attention should be paid to moisture and insect protection to avoid dampness and mold that affect quality.
It should be noted that ground beetle is potent in medicinal action, is contraindicated in pregnant women, and should be used with caution by those with weak spleen and stomach. It should be taken after syndrome differentiation by a professional physician and at the prescribed dosage, and it is not advisable to take it on one's own in large amounts over a long period, so as to avoid adverse reactions.
