Sand-fried Drynaria Rhizome is a commonly used processed product of the traditional Chinese medicine Drynaria Rhizome, whose raw material comes from the dried rhizome of plants in the Polypodiaceae family such as Davallia mariesii and related species. The so-called sand-frying refers to heating the cleaned rhizome with sand-frying or similar methods until the surface swells and the color deepens, then taking it out, knocking off the remaining fuzzy scales, and letting it cool. Because of its swollen appearance and crisp, loose texture, it often appears in pharmacies in the form of sand-fried Drynaria Rhizome slices.

Compared with the raw product, the fuzz of sand-fried Drynaria Rhizome is basically removed, making it cleaner for medicinal use, and easier to slice and crush. The high-temperature treatment can also make the medicinal material crisp, so that the active ingredients are more easily released during decoction, and therefore it is relatively commonly used in decoctions and Chinese patent medicines.

In traditional applications, Drynaria Rhizome is bitter in taste and warm in nature, entering the liver and kidney meridians. It is generally considered to have the effects of tonifying the kidney and strengthening the bones, and healing injuries and relieving pain, and is often used in formula combinations for symptoms such as soreness and weakness of the waist and knees, unfavorable movement of the sinews and bones, and bruises and sprains. There is also a folk practice of grinding it into powder or decocting it in water for external use to relieve toothache; the specific usage should follow a doctor's advice.

When using it, note that those with yin deficiency and hyperactive fire or a hot constitution should not take it in large amounts over a long period, and pregnant women and patients with chronic diseases should first consult a professional physician. When purchasing, choose those with a swollen surface, little remaining fuzz, and no abnormal odor or mold spots. Store them in a cool, dry place in daily life, and take care to prevent moisture and insect damage.
