The soft-shell turtle is the common name for the Chinese softshell turtle (Pelodiscus sinensis, also known as the soft-shelled turtle), so named because it lives in water year-round, and it is a common aquaculture species. Its feeding habits lean toward carnivory, and its food choices differ slightly at different growth stages; understanding its feeding habits is the foundation for raising soft-shell turtles well.

In the wild, soft-shell turtles mainly prey on small fish, small shrimp, snails, mussels and aquatic insects and other animal-based food, and they also eat a small amount of aquatic plants. In artificial farming, fresh fish and shrimp, snail meat and animal offal can be fed, or a dedicated compound feed for softshell turtles can be used, which provides more balanced nutrition. Newly hatched hatchlings can first be fed tiny live foods such as water fleas and tubifex worms, then gradually transition to small fish and shrimp and compound feed as they grow.

When feeding, keep to fixed times, fixed locations and fixed amounts, and flexibly adjust the amount fed according to water temperature and the turtles' food intake. When the water temperature is on the low side, the turtles' appetite declines and they eat less or even stop eating; this is normal and there is no need to force-feed them more. Leftover bait should be cleaned up promptly each time to avoid spoiling the water quality.

If you find that your soft-shell turtles have not eaten for a long time, besides the temperature factor, also watch out for whether the water quality has deteriorated, whether the animals have any disease, or whether the environment is frequently disturbed. Usually, by keeping the water clean, providing a quiet place for basking and resting, and ensuring the bait is fresh and varied, soft-shell turtles will generally feed normally and grow healthily.
