An Introduction to the Benefits, Uses, Wearing and Care of Garnet
Garnet is a common natural gemstone belonging to the silicate mineral family, named for the way its crystal colours and shapes call to mind pomegranate seeds. Common garnets come in red, purplish red, orange and green varieties, among which pyrope and almandine are relatively common, while the emerald-green demantoid is comparatively rare. It is fairly hard with a bright lustre, and has long been cut into bracelets, necklaces, rings, pendants and other kinds of jewellery.
When it comes to the benefits of garnet, an objective view is needed. From a scientific standpoint, it is a mineral crystal whose main value lies in decoration and aesthetics. In folk belief and gemstone culture, various claims circulate, such as that wearing garnet can improve one's complexion, relieve fatigue, or help women regulate their bodies, but these are traditional symbolism or comforting psychological notions and have not been medically proven; wearing garnet should not be treated as a means of curing illness or maintaining health.
As for wearing and care, although garnet is reasonably hard, a strong impact can still cause cracks, so it is best to take it off when exercising, moving heavy objects or doing housework. In daily life, try to avoid contact with perfume, cosmetics, dish soap and other chemicals, and it is also advisable to remove it when bathing. For cleaning, use warm water with a little mild detergent, wipe gently with a soft cloth and let it air dry naturally; when not worn, store it separately to prevent it from scratching or being scratched by other jewellery.
When choosing garnet, you can start from colour, clarity, cut and size. Generally speaking, a deep, even colour, few internal inclusions and good transparency indicate better quality. When buying, ask the seller for a proper appraisal certificate, be wary of dyed, resin-filled or otherwise artificially treated stones, and take the various claimed benefits advertised by sellers with a rational mind; appreciating it as a beautiful natural ornament is the more appropriate attitude.
