The twin-spotted ratsnake is a non-venomous colubrid snake endemic to China, mainly distributed across the plains and low hilly areas of the central and eastern regions. Its name comes from the two obvious dark markings on the neck behind the head, which are also the most intuitive sign for identifying this snake. In the wild it often appears at the edges of farmland, in shrub thickets, along forest margins, and near villages.

Adults are mostly over half a meter in body length, and larger individuals can approach one meter; the body color is mainly grayish brown or yellowish brown, and the back usually has a row of dark saddle-shaped spots. The markings of juvenile snakes are often clearer and brighter, and the color gradually darkens as they grow. Because its appearance is similar to some other ratsnakes, the twin spots behind the head are an important distinguishing feature.

In terms of diet, the twin-spotted ratsnake mainly preys on rodents, lizards, and small birds and bird eggs, which plays a positive role in suppressing rodent damage in farmland, making it a snake species beneficial to agricultural production. It is oviparous and mostly enters the breeding season after the weather warms, and the young snakes live independently as soon as they hatch. When disturbed, it often hides in rock crevices or grass, and generally does not actively attack people.

At present, the twin-spotted ratsnake has been included in the national list of "three-have" protected animals, and wild individuals are protected by law and may not be captured, traded, or harmed at will. Because its body color and patterns are quite ornamental, some enthusiasts also keep it in captivity under compliant conditions. When encountering one in the wild, simply keeping your distance is enough; letting it leave on its own is the best way to handle the situation.
