What Kind of Plant Is Shishangou? An Introduction to Its Characteristics and Care Methods
Shishangou is a folk name for a group of herbaceous plants in the orchid family, generally referring to Ludisia discolor (jewel orchid). Its rhizome is fleshy, white and jointed, closely resembling a lotus root, yet it often creeps along damp, shaded rock faces or stones on the forest floor, which is how it got its name. These plants are mostly distributed in the warm, humid mountain forests of southern China and Southeast Asia.
Shishangou is a low-growing plant with thick, glossy leaves. The leaf surface is often purplish-red and marked with golden or silvery-white netted veins, making it very eye-catching in the light and giving it high ornamental value. It prefers a warm, highly humid environment with diffused light and is often found growing alongside moss. It is intolerant of direct strong sunlight, dry conditions and stuffy heat.
For home cultivation, use a loose, breathable substrate such as leaf mold, bark or sphagnum moss. Keep the substrate moist but not waterlogged in daily care, and place the plant in bright, diffused light. During care, pay attention to ventilation to avoid root rot caused by long-term waterlogged soil, and when temperatures are low, provide warmth and reduce watering.
Shishangou can serve as a foliage potted plant or as a landscaping plant in rainforest terrariums and eco-tanks. It is also used in folk medicine as an herb, believed to clear heat and moisten the lungs, but any medicinal use must follow a doctor's advice, and it must never be collected and consumed on one's own. Because wild resources are increasingly scarce, some producing areas have placed it under protection. It is recommended to choose artificially propagated plants and not to dig up wild populations.
