The rice leaf beetle (Oulema oryzae) is a common leaf-feeding pest during the rice seedling stage. It belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae, and gets its name because the larvae often carry their excrement on their backs, making them look as if they are carrying a small ball of mud. The adults are small beetles, usually with a metallic sheen on their backs; the larvae resemble tadpoles, move slowly, and often gather on the upper surface of rice leaves to feed.

This pest is caused by both adults and larvae chewing the mesophyll of rice leaves, leaving the upper epidermis intact and forming white streaks of varying lengths. In severe outbreaks, entire leaves turn white, and the seedlings grow noticeably weaker. Rice fields in mountainous and hilly areas are often more seriously affected. This insect generally has one generation per year, mostly overwintering as adults among field-edge weeds, in soil crevices, or in rice stubble. The following spring, during the rice seedling growth stage, they migrate into rice fields to reproduce and cause damage.

For control, a combination of agricultural measures and chemical treatment is advisable. Clearing field-edge weeds and residual rice stubble in winter and spring can reduce overwintering pest sources; in the early morning, when the larvae are sluggish, they can be manually knocked off or captured as part of field management to lower the pest population density in the field. When pest numbers are high, targeted pesticides should be sprayed during the young larval stage, used in accordance with the pesticide label instructions, with attention to protecting natural enemies and observing the pre-harvest interval.

Farmers should strengthen routine field inspections. When they notice an increase in white streaks or see larvae crawling while carrying balls of mud, they should take timely measures to prevent the pest from spreading, laying a solid foundation for healthy rice growth.
