A detailed look at the benefits and uses of whole scorpion, a traditional medicinal material with a wide range of uses
Whole scorpion is a traditional animal-based Chinese medicinal material, consisting of the dried whole body of the East Asian scorpion (Mesobuthus martensii) of the family Buthidae. It is usually captured in summer and autumn, killed by scalding in boiling water, and then sun-dried or shade-dried for medicinal use. Because the entire insect body is used as medicine, it is called whole scorpion, and in some areas it is also called whole insect. Shandong, Henan, Hebei and other parts of China are its main producing areas.
From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, whole scorpion is neutral in nature, pungent in taste, slightly toxic, and enters the liver meridian. It is traditionally believed to have the effects of extinguishing wind and relieving spasms, dredging collaterals and relieving pain, and counteracting toxins and dispersing masses. It is often used for convulsions, tetanus, stubborn wind-damp impediment, migraine and general headache, as well as sores and scrofula. Modern research has found that its body contains scorpion venom and a variety of active protein components, and the specific medicinal mechanisms are still being studied.
In practical use, whole scorpion is rarely used alone; it is mostly combined with other Chinese medicinal materials. It can be made into decoctions or ground into powder for pills and powders, and is also often used to make medicinal liquor. In some areas there is also a habit of eating whole scorpion, commonly deep-fried, but when eaten it should also be consumed in moderation and not in excess.
It should be especially noted that whole scorpion has a certain toxicity, and excessive dosage can cause poisoning reactions, so it must be taken under the guidance of a physician or pharmacist. Pregnant women, children and people with weak constitutions should be even more cautious. When purchasing, those with a complete insect body, dry texture and yellow-brown color are preferred. It should be stored in a cool, dry place, with attention to moisture and insect protection, to ensure the quality of the medicinal material.
