String of Pearls is a succulent in the Asteraceae family, genus Senecio. It gets its name because its round, fleshy leaves look like little emerald-green teardrops, and it is also called String of Beads, String of Pearls, or Jade Beads. Its stems are slender and soft, draping naturally over the rim of the pot, with strings of round beads covering the branches. It is highly ornamental and especially suited to growing in hanging baskets.

In terms of habits, String of Pearls prefers a cool, dry environment with soft light. It is drought-tolerant and afraid of waterlogging, and it dislikes high temperatures, high humidity, and scorching sun. Spring and autumn are its main growing seasons. In summer, when temperatures are high, the plant enters dormancy or semi-dormancy, while in winter you need to keep it warm and avoid frost damage from low temperatures.

For care, it is recommended to use a loose, breathable, well-draining gritty soil mix, and to water on the principle of letting the soil dry out between waterings, preferring slightly dry conditions over soggy ones. In daily care, place it in bright, indirect light. In summer, pay attention to shading and ventilation and reduce watering appropriately; in winter, move it to a warm spot. Propagation is mainly by cuttings: cut healthy stems with leaves and lay them flat on slightly moist soil, and with some humidity maintained they will take root and sprout.

The most common problems are root rot and leggy growth: root rot is mostly caused by watering too frequently or soil that does not drain well, so you need to reduce watering promptly and change the potting soil; stretched stems and increased spacing between the beads are usually caused by insufficient light, which can be improved by gradually increasing indirect light. As long as the environment is suitable and care is proper, String of Pearls can grow into a lush green curtain of beads with a strong trailing effect, making it a popular foliage succulent for balconies and windowsills.
