Picky eating refers to the long-term habit of eating only a few types of food while clearly rejecting others. This situation is relatively common in children, and many adults show similar behavior. The main danger of picky eating lies in unbalanced nutrient intake; over time, the body can easily lack certain essential nutrients, which in turn affects normal bodily functions.

The human body needs multiple nutrients such as protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals, which come respectively from different foods such as grains, vegetables, fruits, meat, eggs and milk. People who are picky eaters over the long term often have insufficient intake of dietary fiber, vitamins or minerals, and may experience problems such as weakened immunity, easy fatigue, anemia and constipation. For children in the stage of growth and development, picky eating may also affect height, weight and physical constitution.

Improving picky eating can start with enriching the dining table, trying to achieve food diversity, and eating grains and tubers, vegetables, fruits, fish, meat, eggs, milk and beans in combination, rather than relying on only a few ingredients for a long time. Parents can let children participate in choosing ingredients and simple cooking, prepare disliked foods in different ways, and guide them step by step rather than forcing them to eat.

If picky eating is relatively serious and obvious malnutrition or growth retardation has already appeared, it is advisable to consult a doctor or professional dietitian promptly. Developing the habit from childhood of not being fussy about food and not being picky is both a responsibility to health and a better way to enjoy the flavors and nutrition brought by various ingredients.
