The Benefits of Coix Seed and Mung Bean Porridge and Precautions for Daily Consumption
Coix seed and mung bean porridge is a home-style porridge made mainly from coix seed (Coix lacryma-jobi) and mung beans (Vigna radiata). Both ingredients are common coarse grains and legumes, and cooking them together into porridge gives a refreshing taste. Especially in hot weather, when appetite is poor, many families serve it as part of their daily staple food.
From the perspective of traditional food therapy, coix seed is often considered helpful for promoting diuresis and draining dampness, and for strengthening the spleen, while mung beans are mostly regarded as an ingredient that clears heat and relieves summer heat. When the two are cooked together, folk custom is to eat this in summer to relieve discomfort such as thirst and heaviness of the body caused by summer heat. However, it should be noted that porridge is ultimately an ordinary food, and these claims come from traditional experience and cannot replace medical treatment. If there is obvious physical discomfort, medical attention should still be sought promptly.
When cooking this porridge, since coix seed and mung beans are rather hard in texture, it is recommended to soak them in clean water for several hours or even overnight in advance, then simmer over low heat until the beans and grains split open and become soft and mushy, which gives a better texture. If you prefer a thinner porridge, add more water; if you prefer it thicker, reduce the amount of water appropriately. Whether to add sugar can be adjusted flexibly according to personal taste.
When eating it, also keep in mind that coix seed and mung beans are cooling in nature, so people with a weak and cold spleen and stomach, or those prone to diarrhea, should not eat too much, and special groups such as pregnant women had best consult a doctor before eating. Even the most suitable porridge is only one part of the diet; only with a balanced combination and moderate consumption can you eat comfortably and with peace of mind.
