The Benefits and Effects of Reishi Mushroom and the Precautions for Consuming It Are Worth Knowing
Reishi (Ganoderma) is a type of medicinal fungus in the genus Ganoderma, family Polyporaceae, and has been regarded since ancient times as a prized tonic, often called the "immortal herb" or "auspicious herb" in folk tradition. It mostly grows on the dead wood or stumps of broadleaf trees. Its fruiting body is umbrella-shaped, and the surface of the cap is covered with a hard, leathery crust that often takes on a lacquer-like sheen once mature.
The active components of reishi consist mainly of polysaccharides and triterpenoids. The content and composition of polysaccharides differ between the fruiting body and the mycelium, so when buying, it is worth paying attention to the raw material source stated on the product label. Traditional experience holds that reishi helps to strengthen the vital essence and consolidate the constitution and to calm the mind and aid sleep, while modern research has largely focused on directions such as regulating immunity and relieving fatigue. However, as a health food, its claimed effects must undergo proper certification before they can be advertised, and ordinary consumers should view the related marketing claims rationally.
Common reishi varieties include Ganoderma lucidum (red reishi), Ganoderma sinense (purple reishi), and Ganoderma tsugae, among which red reishi and purple reishi are the most widely used medicinal types. Different varieties differ slightly in appearance, degree of bitterness, and the components they emphasize. Generally, those with thick, glossy caps that are free of insect damage and mold are considered superior.
In daily use, reishi can be sliced and boiled in water, stewed in soup, or infused in liquor, and some people grind it into powder and take it mixed with water. It usually needs to be consumed continuously for some time before changes in the body are easily felt. It should be noted that reishi is a conditioning-type food ingredient and cannot replace medical treatment. Pregnant women, children, and those currently taking medication should best consult a professional before consuming it, and products with proper qualification certification should be purchased through legitimate channels.
