Asparagus seeds are the starting point of sexual reproduction in asparagus. The ripe fruit is red and contains small black seeds with a rather hard seed coat that has poor water permeability. Compared with division propagation, growing seedlings from seed is lower in cost and easier to carry out on a large scale, making it a common propagation method for newly established asparagus fields.

Asparagus is a perennial crop that can be harvested continuously for many years once planted, and the purity and vigor of the seeds directly affect later growth and yield. When purchasing, it is best to choose plump, fresh seeds of normal color; seeds that have been damp or stored too long will show a noticeably lower germination rate, so it is best to buy and sow them as fresh as possible.

Before sowing, the seeds are usually soaked to promote germination so that the hard seed coat absorbs enough water, which helps improve germination speed and uniformity. Sowing should be scheduled in a season when temperatures steadily rise, the seedbed should be kept loose and moist, and after emergence the seedlings should be thinned appropriately; once the young plants have grown several sturdy stems and a good root system, they can be transplanted to the field.

As for varieties, green asparagus types make up the majority in cultivation, but there are also varieties suitable for hilling and blanching to harvest white asparagus, as well as specialty types such as purple asparagus, which can be chosen according to the local climate and target market. Because female and male plants differ in growth vigor, many growers prefer all-male varieties, which make the field population more uniform.

Water management is key during the seedling stage: too wet easily causes seed rot, while too dry makes emergence difficult, and attention must also be paid to preventing seedling diseases such as damping-off. By doing well at both seed selection and seedling raising, asparagus seedlings grown from seed can also grow uniformly and lay a solid foundation for many years of harvest.
