Willow is one of the tree species that bloom in early spring. Its flowering period is mostly concentrated after the spring temperatures rise, and it usually blooms before leafing out, or the flowers and leaves unfold at the same time. Its flowers have no brightly colored petals and appear as catkins, which are often mistaken for new buds, so many people overlook its flowering process.

The exact blooming time varies by region and variety. Overall, willows in the warm south bloom earlier, while those in the cold north are noticeably delayed, and common varieties such as weeping willow and dryland willow also differ slightly in flowering time. If a late spring cold snap occurs, that year's flowering period may also be delayed accordingly.

Willows are dioecious. The catkins of male trees are mostly yellow and fall off soon after blooming; the catkins of female trees are greener and, after pollination, produce seeds with white fluff that drift with the wind, which is what people often call willow catkin fluff. Therefore, willow catkin fluff is not a flower, but the seeds that appear after the flowering period.

If a willow at home does not bloom for a long time, it is mostly related to being too young, insufficient light, or improper pruning. Willows generally need to grow for a certain number of years before they can bloom normally. Willows are highly adaptable and tolerant of wet conditions, and are often planted by rivers and lakes. When they bloom in early spring, they can also provide a nectar source for bees and other insects, offering both ornamental and ecological value.
