How Much Does a Lotus Plant Cost? Factors Affecting Lotus Prices and Buying Tips
The lotus is the flower of a perennial aquatic herb in the genus Nelumbo, family Nelumbonaceae, and is also commonly known among gardeners as the lotus flower (lotus). It is widely distributed across ponds, lakes and courtyard water features throughout both northern and southern parts of China. Lotuses sold on the market include both ornamental potted seedlings and seed lotus rhizomes, as well as a small number of fresh cut flowers, and the price differences between these different forms are fairly obvious.
The main factors affecting lotus prices are variety, size grade and purchasing channel. Ordinary single-petal varieties are easy to propagate and abundantly supplied, so their prices are usually quite affordable; double-petal, bicolor and rare varieties are more difficult to cultivate, so their selling prices rise noticeably. The size of the seed rhizome, whether the buds are plump, and whether the potted seedling is robust are all directly reflected in the listed price.
Season and place of origin also cause price fluctuations. Summer is the lotus's natural peak blooming season, when market supply is plentiful and prices are relatively stable; outside the blooming season or around holidays, the prices of potted plants and cut flowers often rise somewhat. Some lotus-growing regions also hold flower-viewing events during the blooming season, which boosts nearby retail sales, and buying on such occasions is generally quite a bargain.
When buying, it is advisable to first clarify your purpose. If the main goal is ornamental, you can choose ordinary varieties with strong adaptability; if you want to harvest lotus seeds and lotus rhizomes, you should choose dedicated seed lotus or rhizome lotus varieties, which is also the main difference between ornamental lotus and rhizome-type varieties. When selecting seed rhizomes, choose ones that are intact, free of rot and have plump buds; after planting, maintain the water level and provide ample light for a higher survival rate. In addition, lotus and water lily are plants of different genera, with differences in habits and prices, so it is best to confirm clearly with the seller before ordering to avoid buying the wrong plant.
