The dragon bone cactus is a succulent plant in the genus Euphorbia of the family Euphorbiaceae, often called the dragon bone column or rainbow bush. Its stem is upright and triangular in cross-section, with short spines along the ridges, and the plant stands tall and straight, looking from a distance like a green backbone, which is how it got its name. It is native to tropical regions and prefers a warm, dry, sunny environment. It is highly drought-tolerant and is a relatively common variety in household potted plants and courtyard landscaping.

As an ornamental plant, the value of the dragon bone cactus lies mainly in its decorative appeal. It has a tall, imposing form and is easy to care for, making it suitable for placement on balconies, in courtyards, lobbies and other spaces, and in warm climates it can also be planted as a hedge. In daily care, keep the light adequate and water only when the soil is dry, avoiding long-term waterlogging of the potting soil that can cause root rot. In winter, take care to protect it from the cold and keep it warm to reduce cold damage.

Folk tradition holds that the dragon bone cactus can guard the home, purify the air and absorb harmful substances. Among these, guarding the home is more a matter of cultural symbolism, while its actual air-purifying effect is fairly limited and should not be exaggerated. What deserves more attention is that the white milky sap in the stem contains irritating substances, and contact with the skin or accidental entry into the eyes or mouth may cause discomfort. Wear gloves when pruning, and if there are children or pets at home, place it somewhere out of easy reach to prevent accidental ingestion.

In addition, this plant cannot be eaten and must not be used as medicine on one's own. In traditional Chinese medicine there is another medicinal material also named "dragon bone," which is actually the fossil of ancient animal bones and is completely different from this succulent plant; the two must not be confused. Treating the dragon bone cactus as an easy-to-grow, good-looking, low-maintenance ornamental plant is the most appropriate use for it.
