Plum fruit is the ripe fruit of trees in the genus Prunus of the rose family (Rosaceae). It has a long history of cultivation in China, and common types include red-fleshed plums, yellow-fleshed plums and crisp plums. The flesh is sweet and tart and full of juice, and it mostly ripens and comes to market in summer. Besides being eaten fresh, plum fruit is often processed into jam, preserved fruit and fruit wine, making it a seasonal fruit that many people enjoy.

From a nutritional point of view, plum fruit contains sugars, organic acids, dietary fiber and a variety of vitamins and minerals, and its sweet-and-sour flavor comes mainly from the combination of fruit acids and sugars. Eating a small amount before a meal can help stimulate the appetite, and eating a few after a meal also brings a refreshing, palate-cleansing taste, so it is often regarded in folk custom as a summer heat-relieving fruit.

In traditional dietary experience, plum fruit is considered to have effects such as promoting saliva, moistening the mouth and aiding digestion. However, such claims mostly come from accumulated everyday food-based knowledge, and can only serve as a supplement; they cannot replace proper medical treatment. If you have obvious physical discomfort, you should still seek medical attention promptly and not rely on eating fruit alone to solve the problem.

There are also a few points to note when eating plum fruit. Do not eat too many at one time, lest the fruit acids irritate the stomach and intestines and cause bloating or diarrhea; unripe plum fruit has a strong astringent taste and is more irritating, so it is best to wait until it is fully ripe before eating; the pit is hard and contains substances of the bitter-almond type, so never bite into it. People with a weak, cold spleen and stomach, those prone to diarrhea, and young children are advised to try just a small amount first and eat a moderate amount only after observing that the body has no discomfort.
