An Introduction to the Benefits, Effects and Contraindications of Spatholobus suberectus
Spatholobus suberectus is the dried vine stem of the legume plant Spatholobus suberectus (mi hua dou), and it is a traditional herb in common use. It gets its name because when the stem is cut, a dark red resinous sap resembling chicken blood flows out. It is mainly produced in warm, humid regions such as Guangdong, Guangxi and Yunnan.
In appearance, the sliced decoction pieces of Spatholobus suberectus are mostly oval or irregular oblique slices. On the cut surface, the xylem and phloem are arranged alternately, and reddish-brown or purplish-red resinous streaks are often visible. Better-quality slices are firm in texture with clear grain, have a faint odor and a slightly astringent taste.
In traditional Chinese medicine theory, Spatholobus suberectus is bitter and slightly sweet in flavor, warm in nature, and enters the liver meridian. It is traditionally believed to nourish the blood and invigorate blood circulation, regulate menstruation and relieve pain, and relax the sinews and invigorate the collaterals. It is often used in combination formulas for sallow complexion due to blood deficiency, irregular menstruation, dysmenorrhea, as well as rheumatic arthralgia and numbness of the limbs, making it a relatively common herb in gynecological and rheumatic formulas.
In daily use, Spatholobus suberectus is generally taken as decoction pieces simmered into a soup, and it is also often paired with angelica (dong gui) and red dates to make soups or medicinal dishes. However, the specific dosage and combinations should be matched to individual constitution and used under the guidance of a professional physician; taking it on one's own in large amounts over a long period is not recommended.
It should be noted that Spatholobus suberectus is not suitable for everyone. Pregnant women should use it with caution, and people with heavy menstruation or a bleeding tendency should also consult a physician before use. If discomfort occurs while taking it, use should be stopped promptly and medical attention sought, so as not to delay treatment.
