Characteristics, Uses and Lawn Maintenance Methods of Centipedegrass
Centipedegrass is a perennial warm-season turfgrass of the genus Eremochloa in the grass family (Poaceae), native to southern China and parts of Southeast Asia, and in some areas it is also called centipede grass or Suzhou grass. The plant is low-growing, with stolons that creep along the ground and produce adventitious roots at the nodes, giving it strong coverage ability; it is one of the common ground-cover grass species in southern regions.
The greatest advantage of this grass is its tolerance of rough, low-input management. It prefers a warm, humid climate, tolerates drought and poor, infertile soil, and can grow normally even in somewhat acidic soil; it needs little fertilizer, suffers relatively few pests and diseases, and has low maintenance costs. However, its cold tolerance and wear tolerance are only average, its growth rate is rather slow, and it takes some time to form a full lawn; in winter, when temperatures are low, the aboveground parts turn yellow and go dormant, then resume growth after the warmth of spring returns.
In terms of applications, centipedegrass is often used in park green spaces, courtyard lawns, road slope protection and soil and water conservation, and can also serve as a cover-crop material between orchard rows. Because its management requirements are not high, it is especially suited to large-scale greening or maintenance situations with limited manpower, making it a common choice for low-input green spaces.
In cultivation, it is mainly established by laying stolons or transplanting grass blocks, and it can also be propagated by seed, though the lawn forms relatively slowly. Daily management should involve little fertilizer and moderate mowing; too much fertilizer may instead cause excessive vegetative growth or bring on disease. Pay attention to drainage during the rainy season, and simply supply a little water during dry periods. Overwintering is relatively difficult in cold regions, so local climate conditions should be taken into overall consideration when choosing to plant it.
