Can Starfish Be Eaten? Some Species Are Edible, but You Need to Know How
Starfish are a type of echinoderm that lives in the ocean. Their bodies are mostly star-shaped with five arms, they move slowly, and they are mainly found in coastal waters such as rocky reefs and tidal flats. They feed on small marine organisms such as shellfish, and they play the role of predator in the marine ecosystem. When their numbers grow too large, they can also threaten shellfish farming.
In fact, starfish can be eaten, but not all species are suitable for consumption. In the coastal areas of northern China, species such as the common starfish (Asterias rubens) are relatively common, and local people often steam them before eating. The edible part is mainly the starfish's gonads, commonly known as starfish roe, which has a dense, creamy texture and a faint seafood flavor.
It is important to note that some starfish contain toxins in their bodies; species such as the crown-of-thorns starfish are not suitable for eating. So when choosing starfish, you must confirm the species to avoid eating the wrong kind. In addition, because starfish feed on organisms on the seafloor, harmful substances may accumulate in their bodies, so they should be thoroughly cleaned and fully cooked before eating. People who are allergic to seafood are advised not to try them.
Besides being eaten, starfish have other uses. Because starfish prey on shellfish, farmers often harvest and remove them; after processing, they can be used as fertilizer or as a raw material for aquatic feed, achieving resource utilization. Overall, starfish can be eaten, but you need to choose the right species, cook them thoroughly, and eat them in moderation to eat with peace of mind.
