Jin flowers usually refer to the flowers produced by the rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus), a deciduous shrub in the mallow family (Malvaceae), genus Hibiscus, cultivated in many places as a hedge or garden ornamental plant. Its flowers mostly open in the early morning and wither by evening; a single flower has a very short lifespan, but throughout the summer and autumn the plant keeps producing buds that bloom one after another for several months, hence the saying that it opens in the morning and falls at dusk.

The colors of Jin flowers are quite varied, with white, pink, pale purple and blue-purple being common, and the flower forms are divided into single and double. Single-flowered varieties are fresh and elegant, while double-flowered varieties, with their many layers of petals, are more ornamental. The related species Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, also commonly called fuchsia, has a flower shape similar to the rose of Sharon, but Hibiscus rosa-sinensis prefers warm environments, while the rose of Sharon is relatively more cold-tolerant.

In terms of care, the rose of Sharon is a fairly easy plant to manage; it likes a sunny environment and can also tolerate a certain degree of drought and poor soil. During the growing season, keep the soil moist but absolutely avoid waterlogging; remove spent flowers promptly after blooming, and carry out a shaping prune once in winter or early spring, which can make the branches thicker and sturdier and bring more vigorous blooming the following year. When ventilation is poor, it easily attracts aphids, so pay attention in daily care and deal with pests as early as possible once found.

Besides being ornamental, Jin flowers also have a tradition of being used as food and medicine in some regions; after blanching, the flowers can be served cold or used in soup, with a tender texture. Planting rose of Sharon in the garden as a flowering hedge not only provides continuous floral scenery in summer but also serves to screen and divide spaces, making it a choice that balances beauty and practicality.
