The benefits and effects of Sichuan pepper, with a very wide range of everyday uses
Sichuan pepper (Zanthoxylum bungeanum) is the fruit of a plant in the genus Zanthoxylum of the Rutaceae family. After the peel is dried in the sun, it turns reddish brown, with a surface covered in tiny raised bumps, a fragrant aroma, and a prominent numbing taste, making it one of the traditional seasonings commonly used in China. It is widely grown in Sichuan, Shaanxi, Gansu, and other places, and the Sichuan pepper from quite a few production areas has gained considerable fame in the market.
In cooking, Sichuan pepper is mainly used to remove unpleasant odors and boost aroma. Whether stir-frying, stewing meat, or curing foods, adding a little Sichuan pepper can suppress fishy and gamy smells and make a dish more fragrant. It is also an indispensable ingredient in hot pot base and spicy-flavor dishes; the numbing-and-spicy taste formed by pairing it with chili peppers is much loved by people in many regions.
Sichuan pepper also holds a certain place in traditional wellness practices. Traditional Chinese medicine considers Sichuan pepper warm in nature and pungent in taste, and it is said to warm the middle and dispel cold, and to remove dampness and relieve pain. In folk practice, people often use Sichuan pepper water to soak their feet or boil Sichuan pepper water for daily conditioning. However, these practices are mostly based on experience; if you feel unwell, you should still seek medical attention in time, and Sichuan pepper cannot replace treatment.
Besides being eaten and used medicinally, Sichuan pepper also has many practical household uses. Its smell has a repellent effect on certain insects, so putting dried Sichuan pepper in a cloth bag and placing it in a rice bin or wardrobe can provide a certain insect-preventing and moisture-proof effect. The Sichuan pepper tree itself has thorny branches and a compact shape, so rural areas often plant it as a hedge.
It should be noted that Sichuan pepper tends toward warmth in nature, so people who easily get heaty or who have conditions such as mouth ulcers or sore, swollen throat should eat it in moderation. When buying, choose those with dry peel, natural color, and a rich aroma; when storing, keep them sealed and away from light to prevent the aroma from dissipating and moisture damage.
