Astragalus is the dried root of the legume plants Astragalus membranaceus var. mongholicus or Astragalus membranaceus, a qi-tonifying medicinal herb commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine, mainly produced in northern China. Its slices are mostly pale yellow or yellowish-white, with a slight bean-like smell, and it is often used in daily life for making soup, steeping in water, or as part of medicinal formulas.

In traditional applications, astragalus is believed to tonify qi and stabilize the exterior, promote diuresis and reduce swelling, and draw out toxins and promote tissue regeneration. It is often used for qi deficiency and fatigue, easy sweating, poor appetite, and sores or ulcers that do not heal for a long time. Many people like to combine astragalus with red dates, goji berries, and other ingredients to boil in water or stew in soup as a way of daily conditioning.

However, astragalus is not suitable for everyone. It is generally believed that it should not be taken during colds and fever, so as not to prevent the exterior pathogen from dispersing and worsen discomfort; people with yin deficiency and hyperactive fire or excess heat in the body may experience dry mouth, irritability, or internal heat after taking it; excessive consumption may also cause problems such as abdominal bloating and dizziness. Pregnant women, people with high blood pressure, and those taking other medications should best consult a physician before use.

When selecting astragalus, those with thick, sturdy roots, a yellowish-white cross-section, abundant powdery texture, and a mild odor are preferred. It should be stored in a well-ventilated, dry place, taking care to prevent moisture and insect damage. All medicinal herbs require proper matching to the condition and appropriate dosage. Although astragalus is a common tonic herb, it is not recommended to take it in large amounts on your own for a long time; use under the guidance of a professional is more reliable.
