Luan Pigeon: A Large Domestic Pigeon Breed, an Introduction to Its Appearance and Rearing Value
The Luan pigeon is a large breed among domestic pigeons and is often classed in pigeon keeping as a dual-purpose meat and ornamental type. Its most striking feature is its large individual size, thick frame and well-developed breast muscles, placing it among the larger types of domestic pigeons, which is why it draws the attention of both meat-pigeon breeders and ornamental-pigeon fanciers.
In appearance, the Luan pigeon has a solid, stocky body, a broad breast and back, a thick short neck and a steady stance, giving an overall impression of bulk. Its plumage colours are fairly rich, with common varieties including white, grey, black and pied. In temperament, Luan pigeons are generally docile and not easily startled, making day-to-day management relatively worry-free.
Raising Luan pigeons is much the same as raising other domestic pigeons: they need a dry, well-ventilated loft, clean drinking water and a nutritionally balanced feed. Because of their large size and correspondingly larger appetite, nutrition can be supplemented appropriately during the brooding period to help the parent pigeons feed their squabs. In some farming situations, large pigeons that are robust and reliable at brooding are also used as foster pigeons to rear the young of other breeds.
It should be noted that large pigeon breeds have slightly higher requirements for activity space, and cages that are too cramped can easily affect pairing, breeding and daily activity. When introducing stock, choose healthy, well-developed individuals and keep up routine cleaning and disease prevention, so that Luan pigeons can maintain good growth and breeding condition.
