Tree peony bark (Danpi) is the dried root bark of the peony, a plant in the buttercup family, also known as moutan bark, and it is a commonly used traditional Chinese medicinal herb. The root bark is usually stripped from the dug-up peony roots and dried in the sun for medicinal use; the finished product is mostly cylindrical or half-cylindrical, with a grayish-brown outer surface, a relatively flat broken surface, a distinctive aroma, and a slightly bitter and astringent taste.

From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, tree peony bark is slightly cold in nature, bitter and pungent in taste, and enters the heart, liver and kidney meridians. Its main effects are clearing heat and cooling the blood, and invigorating blood circulation to resolve blood stasis. Traditionally it is mostly used for warm-disease fever, blood-heat vomiting and epistaxis, yin-deficiency fever, amenorrhea and painful menstruation, traumatic injuries and pain, and carbuncles, swellings and sores. Its components such as paeonol have also attracted attention in modern research, and the related effects are still being explored; specific use should be subject to medical advice.

In practical application, tree peony bark is rarely used alone; it is often combined with other medicinal materials according to the condition, for example with heat-clearing and blood-cooling drugs for blood-heat syndrome, or with blood-invigorating and stasis-resolving drugs for blood stasis obstruction. It is also one of the component drugs of classic formulas such as Liuwei Dihuang Wan. Before being used as medicine, tree peony bark generally needs to be processed, and it is mostly taken as a decoction; the specific dosage and combination should be determined by a physician according to the individual constitution and condition.

It should be noted that tree peony bark is cold in nature, so people with blood deficiency and cold, pregnant women, and those with excessive menstruation should use it with caution, and it should not be taken on one's own for a long time. In addition, the medicinal part of tree peony bark is the root bark, which is different in use from the ornamental peony flower, and the two should not be confused. If you wish to use tree peony bark to regulate your body, it is advisable to consult a professional traditional Chinese medicine practitioner first and use it reasonably after syndrome differentiation.
