Andrographis paniculata is an annual herb in the Acanthaceae family, also known as "yi jian xi", "ku dan cao" and "lan he lian". The whole plant can be used as medicine, with the leaves being the most commonly used part. Its taste is extremely bitter and cold, with a bitterness that seems to reach straight to the bottom of the heart, which is how it got the name "chuan xin lian" (piercing-heart lotus). This plant is native to tropical Asia, and today it is cultivated in several provinces in southern China, making it a common medicinal crop.

From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, Andrographis paniculata is cold in nature and bitter in taste, with the effects of clearing heat and detoxifying, cooling the blood and reducing swelling. It is traditionally used for heat patterns such as colds with fever, sore and swollen throat, mouth and tongue sores, and boils and sores. Modern research suggests that Andrographis paniculata contains a variety of active compounds represented by andrographolide, and Chinese patent medicines made from it are relatively common in clinical use. It should be noted that these are medicinal effects, fundamentally different from health foods. If you feel unwell, you should seek medical attention promptly and must not substitute self-medication for treatment.

When using Andrographis paniculata, also note that it is cold and cooling in nature, so people with a weak and cold spleen and stomach should not use much of it, and pregnant women and those with weaker constitutions should take it under a physician's guidance. In addition, there is a cold salad vegetable on the market also named "chuan xin lian", which is actually the tender leaves of another plant and is not the same as the medicinal Andrographis paniculata, so care should be taken to distinguish them when buying and eating.

As for cultivation, Andrographis paniculata prefers a warm and humid climate and is not tolerant of frost. It is usually sown in spring after temperatures rise, and is suitable for fertile, loose soil with good drainage. During the growing period, keep the soil moist and weed and apply topdressing in time, and the plants will grow vigorously, laying the foundation for harvest.
