Northern Pig Farming Requires Attention to Cold Protection, Heat Preservation, and Scientific Feeding Management
Pig farming in the north is an important livestock production activity in the northern regions of China, widely distributed across the Northeast, North China, and Northwest. Compared with the south, northern winters are long and cold, with large temperature differences between day and night, making insulation and cold protection of pig houses the primary task in farming. At the same time, the northern grain-producing areas are rich in feed resources, with ample supply of raw materials such as corn and soybean meal, providing favorable conditions for developing large-scale pig farming.
In breed selection, both growth speed and meat production performance should be considered, as well as cold resistance. Local breeds such as the Min pig have strong cold tolerance and good adaptability, while introduced breeds such as Landrace, Large White, and Duroc grow quickly and have a high lean meat rate. In production, introduced breeds are often crossed with local breeds so that the offspring combine meat production performance with environmental adaptability.
Winter feeding management is a key part of pig farming in the north. Pig houses need good insulation, and methods such as plastic greenhouses, adding bedding, and auxiliary heating can be used to raise the temperature inside the house. At the same time, ventilation should be carried out in a timely manner to prevent the accumulation of harmful gases such as ammonia. In terms of feed, the energy level can be appropriately increased to help pigs resist the cold, and drinking water should preferably be supplied warm to reduce cold stress.
Disease prevention and control should not be ignored either. In winter and spring, temperatures fluctuate greatly, and pigs are prone to respiratory diseases and diarrhea. It is necessary to keep pens dry and clean, complete vaccinations and deworming on schedule, and isolate and handle sick pigs promptly when discovered. Overall, as long as the four aspects of insulation, ventilation, nutrition, and epidemic prevention are handled well, pig farming in the north can also achieve stable and healthy farming returns.
