Yunnan cycad is an evergreen woody plant of the genus Cycas in the family Cycadaceae, mainly distributed in the warm regions around Yunnan in China, and is a gymnosperm with a very ancient history, often called a living fossil of the plant kingdom. Its trunk is thick and low, with pinnate compound leaves concentrated at the top of the stem, and the leaflets are leathery and glossy, giving the whole plant an archaic, vigorous form, evergreen in all seasons, with high ornamental value.

Yunnan cycad is a dioecious plant; male plants produce cylindrical male cones, while the megasporophylls of female plants are densely covered with down, and the seeds are mostly red to reddish-brown when mature. It grows slowly and has a long lifespan, often taking many years from sowing to growing into a spectacular plant, so fully formed old plants are especially rare.

In gardens and homes, Yunnan cycad is often used as a courtyard accent or potted ornamental, and can also be used to make cycad bonsai. Its form is steady and its leaves upright, and placing it in a courtyard or hall can create a rich natural atmosphere; it is a much-loved traditional foliage plant.

When caring for Yunnan cycad, provide it with a warm environment with ample light; in summer, shade it appropriately from strong light, and in winter, take care to protect it from the cold and keep it warm to avoid frost damage from low temperatures. Sandy soil that is loose, fertile and well-drained is best; water according to the principle of letting the soil dry before watering again, and never let water accumulate in the pot, which can cause root rot. During the growing season, a small amount of dilute liquid fertilizer can be applied, and repotting does not need to be frequent, once every few years is enough.

In daily care, if the leaves turn yellow, it is mostly related to overwatering, insufficient nutrients or improper light, so first check whether the potting soil is dry or wet and then adjust accordingly. In addition, many people confuse Yunnan cycad with cycad fern; in fact, cycad fern belongs to the ferns and is not closely related to cycads, the two merely have similar leaf shapes. It should also be noted that wild Cycas plants are under national key protection, so artificially propagated seedlings should be chosen for cultivation.
