Nicotiana, also called flowering tobacco, is an ornamental flowering plant in the genus Nicotiana of the Solanaceae family. Although it belongs to the same genus as ordinary tobacco, it is grown mainly for its flowers. Its blooms are trumpet- or funnel-shaped, in colors such as white, pink, red and purple, and some varieties release a faint fragrance when they open in the evening. It is often used for flower bed arrangements or grown in pots for ornamental display.

Nicotiana is an annual or perennial herb, with both tall and short forms; the dwarf varieties suit pots and the edges of flower borders, while the tall ones can serve as a backdrop in flower beds. It likes a sunny, warm environment, tolerates heat but fears frost, and in most regions is usually grown as an annual. Its flowering period is long, and with proper care it can bloom for several months in a row.

When caring for Nicotiana, place it in a spot with plenty of light; insufficient light easily leads to leggy growth and fewer flowers. Water according to the principle of letting the soil dry before watering again, and never let water accumulate, which causes root rot. During the growing season, apply light fertilizer frequently, mainly phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, to encourage flowering. It is mostly propagated by sowing; the seeds are tiny, so cover them with only a shallow layer of soil after sowing and keep them moist to germinate.

Common problems are mainly leggy growth and yellowing leaves caused by insufficient light, and root rot caused by overwatering. If you notice yellowing leaves, first check the light and the moisture of the potting soil. With its distinctive flowers and rich colors, Nicotiana can decorate a courtyard or balcony and is also suitable for a windowsill or office desk, making it a home-grown flower that combines ornamental value with ease of care.
