Growing bowl lotus is not difficult; the key lies in light and water quality
Bowl lotus is a miniature variety of lotus, named for its compact plant type, which can be grown in a container the size of a bowl opening. It belongs to the perennial aquatic plants of the genus Nelumbo in the family Nymphaeaceae; its leaves are round and emerald green, and although its flowers are not large, they are as elegant and charming as those of the lotus, making it a very popular ornamental aquatic flower for the home.
The underground stem of the bowl lotus is a small lotus root, and its root system is relatively shallow. Generally, the plant height is only 20 to 30 cm, and the flower diameter is only a few cm, making it especially suitable for placement in places with limited space such as balconies and windowsills. Common varieties can be divided by flower color into several series such as red, pink, white, and yellow. Some varieties bloom profusely, while others are prized for their elegant leaf form. When choosing, you can match them according to your own preferences and the size of the container.
When caring for bowl lotus, light is the first priority. It is a strongly light-loving plant and should preferably receive more than six hours of direct sunlight each day; insufficient light often results in only leaves growing and no flowers. Water level and water quality should also be noted. In the early planting stage, keep the water layer shallower, then gradually deepen it as the floating leaves grow. It is best to use sun-dried tap water or clean pond water. Usually pay attention to replenishing water, and if the water becomes cloudy and smelly, replace it promptly.
As for fertilizing, a small amount of base fertilizer can be placed at the bottom of the pot when planting, and during the growing season, additional fertilizer can be applied as appropriate according to leaf color. Never apply too much at once, otherwise it is easy to burn the roots and seedlings. Many beginners fail with bowl lotus, and the problem is mostly insufficient light, water that is too deep, or excessive fertilizing. As long as the environment is suitable and management is proper, bowl lotus can bloom successively from late spring to autumn, and a small pot can bring a lot of vitality and elegant charm to the home.
