When Do Camellias Bloom: An Introduction to Their Blooming Patterns and Care Methods
Camellia is a traditional famous flower of China. Its blooming period generally runs from October each year to May of the following year, with the peak blooming period mostly concentrated from January to March, that is, in late winter and early spring. At this time many flowers are still in a dormant or semi-dormant state, yet camellias can bloom braving the cold, with brilliant flower colors and a dignified plant form, which makes them especially beloved.
The blooming times of different camellia varieties differ considerably. Early-flowering varieties begin to show flowers as early as late autumn and early winter, common varieties mostly bloom from winter to early spring, and late-flowering varieties can keep blooming until around April. There are also some bred four-season varieties that, under proper care, can bloom multiple times a year, giving a longer ornamental period.
How early or late the blooming period comes is also closely related to climate and cultivation conditions. In southern regions the temperature rises quickly, so blooming is generally earlier; in the north, where winters are cold, the blooming period of camellias grown in the open ground is correspondingly delayed, while potted plants moved indoors for warmth often have their blooming period advanced. Plants with sufficient light and stable temperatures bloom more uniformly, and their flower colors are fuller and more vivid.
If you want camellias to bloom on time and for the blooming period to last longer, management before and during the blooming period is key. During the bud stage, keep light sufficient and avoid frequently moving the pot; water so that the soil dries and then gets wet, and by no means allow waterlogging that rots the roots; after buds appear, thin them appropriately so that the remaining buds open larger and better. During the blooming period, apply less concentrated fertilizer, and take care that the ambient temperature does not swing sharply up and down; in this way you can relax and enjoy one wave of flowers after another.
