Mosquito-repellent plants are plants that contain special aromatic substances whose scent keeps mosquitoes away. Most of them naturally give off a fresh fragrance, and the smell becomes more noticeable when their leaves or stems are touched or pruned. They can both decorate the surroundings and, to a certain extent, reduce mosquito nuisance, so they are often placed on balconies, windowsills or in courtyards.

Common mosquito-repellent plants include mosquito plant, mint, rosemary, lavender, mugwort, marigold and pyrethrum. Mosquito plant, also called scented geranium, has a lemon-like scent and is a regular at flower markets; the cool, fresh scent of mint keeps mosquitoes from coming near; pyrethrum is even a traditional source of insecticide. Most of these varieties are tough and easy to grow, so even beginners can handle them with ease.

As for care, most mosquito-repellent plants like plenty of sunlight and a well-ventilated environment, and the more light they get, the stronger their scent tends to be. Follow the principle of watering when the soil is dry and letting it dry out between waterings, and avoid long-term waterlogging in the pot; in the high heat of summer, you can add a little more water as appropriate. Herbs like mint and rosemary grow quickly, and regular pinching and topping can make the plant fuller, while the leaves you pick can also be used to make tea or cook with.

One thing to keep in mind is that potted mosquito-repellent plants have a limited range of effect; they mainly work through their scent in small spaces and cannot completely replace mosquito screens, mosquito nets and other anti-mosquito measures. If you want them to play a bigger role, you can group several pots together at doors, windows and other places where mosquitoes tend to come in and out, and at the same time promptly clean up standing water in the home to reduce mosquito breeding at the source.
