The fiddle-leaf fig (Ficus lyrata) is an evergreen tree in the mulberry family, genus Ficus, named for its broad leaves that closely resemble the shape of a violin. It is native to the tropical regions of Africa, with an upright habit, deep green glossy leaves and clearly defined veins. In recent years it has become a very popular indoor foliage plant, suitable for placing in living rooms, studies and similar spaces.

When caring for a fiddle-leaf fig, light is the key. It likes a bright environment and is best placed where there is plenty of diffused light; kept in a dark corner for a long time, it tends to drop leaves and grow leggy. When the strong summer sun shines directly, shade it appropriately to keep the leaves from being scorched and turning yellow.

Do not water too often. The principle for the potting soil is to let it dry out and then get wet; once the surface soil feels dry, water thoroughly in one go, and never let water accumulate in the pot, or the roots will easily rot. During winter heating, when the air is dry, you can frequently mist the leaves or wipe them with a damp cloth, which both adds moisture and keeps the leaf surface glossy.

The fiddle-leaf fig likes warmth, so take care to protect it from the cold in winter; room temperature should not be too low, and at the same time avoid placing it near air-conditioning or heating vents, as alternating cold and heat easily causes leaf drop. In daily care, try to keep it in a fixed position; frequent moving will also make the plant uncomfortable. As long as light, water and temperature are all taken care of, the fiddle-leaf fig will grow lush and full of branches and leaves, adding rich greenery to your home.
