Blue sage (Salvia farinacea), also known as mealycup sage, is an herbaceous plant in the mint family, Lamiaceae, in the genus Salvia, and is often grown as an annual or biennial. Its inflorescence is a spike, with small blue-purple flowers densely arranged; when in full bloom, it looks like a haze of blue-purple from a distance, so it is often used to create flower sea landscapes. Because its flower shape and color are somewhat similar to lavender, many gardening enthusiasts easily confuse the two, but they are clearly different in leaf form and scent.

In landscape applications, blue sage has quite a wide range of uses. It can be planted in masses in flower beds and borders, or grown in pots placed on balconies and in courtyards, and it looks especially good paired with white and yellow flowers. Its flowering period is long, and with proper management it can bloom from summer all the way into autumn, making it a very popular blue-flowered ornamental plant for summer and autumn.

For care, blue sage likes a sunny environment; the more light it gets, the more compact the plant form and the more flowers it produces. It is not demanding about soil, but a loose, fertile, well-drained medium is best. Water according to the principle of watering when dry and letting it dry out between waterings, avoiding waterlogging that can cause root rot. During the growing period, pinch back appropriately to encourage branching, making the plant fuller and increasing flower quantity.

It should be noted that blue sage is not cold-tolerant, so in regions with low winter temperatures, pay attention to cold protection, or grow it as an annual flower. In addition, its flowers open at different times; promptly removing spent flowers after blooming can reduce nutrient consumption and encourage the side branches to bloom again. In the culture of flower language, sage is often given the beautiful meaning of family happiness, and with its romantic blue-purple flower spikes, it has always held a place among courtyard and balcony flowers.
