What Tree Is the Silk Tree? Learn About Its Characteristics and Care in One Article
The silk tree (Albizia julibrissin) is a deciduous tree in the genus Albizia of the Fabaceae family, also known as the velvet flower tree, the Persian silk tree, and the night-closing tree. Its leaves are bipinnately compound, with the leaflets spreading open by day and closing at night, which is the origin of the name "night-closing tree." It blooms every summer, producing pink, fuzzy, fan-shaped flowers that look like sheer gauze and are highly ornamental.
In landscaping, the silk tree is often used as a street tree, shade tree, and ornamental garden tree; its canopy is broad and open, providing a large area of green shade in summer. Its flowers and bark are also used in traditional Chinese medicine; the silk tree flower is often considered to have a calming and mood-lifting effect, and the silk tree bark is likewise a common medicinal material. In addition, as a legume, the silk tree has a certain nitrogen-fixing ability, which also helps improve the soil.
For care, the silk tree prefers a sunny, warm, and humid environment, and it also has a certain tolerance for drought and cold, growing best in deep, well-drained soil. When planting, choose a sunny, sheltered spot; during the seedling stage, pay attention to watering and cold protection, and after it becomes established, management is relatively minimal. It can be fertilized appropriately during the growing season, and cutting out overly dense branches and dead branches after flowering can make the tree shape more attractive.
As for common problems, the silk tree tends to develop yellow leaves in alkaline soil in northern regions, which can be improved by adding more organic fertilizer or adjusting the soil pH. At the same time, watch out for and control trunk-boring pests such as longhorn beetles and jewel beetles, and be alert to wilt disease; once branches are found to be withering, prune them promptly and improve air circulation. With proper routine management, the silk tree can maintain a good ornamental appearance for many years.
