A Detailed Guide to Building a Succulent Wall and Its Care Tips
A succulent wall is a decorative form in which succulents are planted or arranged in a certain layout on a vertical structure, forming a three-dimensional green landscape. It can be a wooden picture frame, a planting box, a mesh hanging bag, or something made by upcycling old objects. It often appears on balconies, in courtyards, on living room walls and in shop windows, serving both an ornamental and a decorative purpose.
The popularity of succulent walls is related to the characteristics of succulents themselves. Their leaves are thick and fleshy, they are highly drought-tolerant, and their roots are relatively shallow, so they can survive without deep soil and are very well suited to thin-layer planting. In addition, their compact forms and rich variety of colors and shapes give a strong sense of layering when planted in groups, making the overall ornamental effect very striking.
The varieties suitable for walls are mainly those that tolerate sun, are easy to grow and spread readily, such as Sempervivum 'Guanyinlian' (hens and chicks), Graptoveria 'Titubans' (white peony), Graptopetalum paraguayense (ghost plant), Sedum morganianum (burro's tail), Sedum hispanicum var. minus (tiny blue-gray stonecrop), and Sedum pachyphyllum (jelly beans). Varieties with creeping stems can hang down naturally, while rosette-forming varieties are suited to orderly arrangement; combining the two can make the wall look fuller and more well-proportioned.
Several points need attention when making and caring for one. First, make sure the structure has a drainage layer to avoid waterlogging that causes root rot; second, place it in a spot with ample light and good ventilation, since insufficient light easily leads to leggy growth and fading of color. Water sparingly; you can mist to replenish moisture or water along the edges, and wait until the soil has dried out completely before watering again. Watch for pests such as mealybugs in daily care and deal with them promptly when found, and the succulent wall can then stay in good condition for the long term.
