Mix Succulent Potting Soil This Way for a Loose, Airy Mix That Resists Root Rot

Succulent potting soil is a growing medium specially blended for the characteristics of succulents, and its core requirements are looseness, airiness and good drainage. The leaves and stems of succulents can store large amounts of water, and their roots dread being stuck for long periods in a damp, stuffy environment, or problems such as root rot and black rot easily follow. It is fair to say that a suitable soil largely determines whether succulents can survive and thrive.

The materials commonly used for mixing soil fall roughly into two categories. One is organic matter such as peat moss, coconut coir and leaf mold, which holds water and nutrients; the other is granular material such as perlite, vermiculite, volcanic rock, maifan stone, coarse sand and coal cinder, which increases airiness and drainage. In home care, the granular proportion for mature succulents is usually larger, while seedlings and freshly rooted cuttings can take more fine-textured soil, which favors root development.

When potting up, you can line the bottom of the pot with a layer of expanded clay pebbles or broken tiles to help excess water drain away. For routine watering, follow the principle of watering thoroughly only after the soil has dried out, letting the soil go through cycles of wet and dry so the roots can grow healthily. After one or two years of use, potting soil tends to compact and lose nutrients, so it is best to replace it with fresh soil when you repot.

Many people fail with succulents, and the problem is often the soil. If the soil stays wet for a long time after watering and the surface turns pale and hard, it is most likely too low in granules or too water-retentive, so you can add more granules to adjust the mix. Climate and growing conditions vary greatly from region to region, and there is no single answer to soil mixing; adjusting flexibly to your own environment is the key to getting succulents into great shape.
