Daidaihua is an evergreen shrub or small tree in the citrus genus of the Rutaceae family, also known as huiqingcheng or daidai, and it is a variety of bitter orange. It often produces pure white flowers in spring and summer, with a rich fragrance that can be smelled from far away. The fruit it bears is first green, then turns orange-yellow when ripe; if left unpicked on the branch, the following year it turns from yellow back to green and bears fruit again, continuing generation after generation, which is how it got its name. In folk tradition it is often regarded as a symbol of good fortune across generations.

As an ornamental plant, daidaihua is excellent in both flower and fruit, suitable for planting in the ground in a courtyard or in pots on a balcony, and it also looks charming placed in a living room or study. Besides being attractive and fragrant, its flowers can be used to scent flower tea and extract essential oils, and the dried fruit is often used to make infused drinks, making it a household flower that is both ornamental and practical.

For care, daidaihua likes a warm, humid environment with plenty of light, and it is suitable for growing in loose, fertile, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. During the growing season, keep the potting soil moist but not waterlogged, and supplement appropriately with phosphorus and potassium fertilizer around the flowering and fruiting periods, so that flowering and fruit set will be better. Its cold tolerance is limited, so in northern regions the potted plant should be moved indoors after winter begins and kept in a sunny spot to overwinter.

In routine management, also pay attention to pruning and ventilation, and promptly cut off dead branches and overly dense branches, which can both maintain the plant's shape and reduce pests and diseases. In a stuffy, humid environment it easily attracts scale insects or develops sooty mold, so treat it as soon as it is discovered. As long as light and water-fertilizer management are in place, daidaihua is not difficult to grow; over time it will bloom and bear fruit year after year, becoming more appealing the longer it is kept.
