Cypress is the collective name for plants in the Cupressaceae family, mostly evergreen trees or shrubs, with upright, well-proportioned forms, tiny dense leaves, and greenery all year round. It is highly adaptable, tolerant of drought and cold, and has low soil requirements, so it can grow normally in most parts of our country, making it a very common tree species in courtyard landscaping and afforestation of barren hills.

The common cypress species mainly include Chinese arborvitae, Chinese juniper, Chinese prickly juniper, Chinese cypress, dragon juniper, and creeping juniper. The Chinese arborvitae has flat leaves arranged in a plane, and is one of the cypresses with a long history of cultivation in our country; the Chinese juniper, also called sabina, has a crown shaped like a pointed tower or cone, and is often used as a street tree and shade tree. The Chinese prickly juniper has needle-like leaves and a rugged, vigorous posture, while the creeping juniper grows with its branches creeping along the ground, making it suitable as ground cover or bonsai material.

Cypresses stay green all year round, live long, and have a dignified and solemn tree form, so they are often used for landscaping in parks, cemeteries, and along roadsides. Its wood is hard and fine-grained, with a natural fresh fragrance and good rot resistance, and can be used for construction, carving, and furniture making. In addition, small cypresses can be made into bonsai after pruning and wiring, with an antique posture and high ornamental value.

Cypress care is relatively simple; it likes a sunny, well-ventilated environment, should not be watered too frequently, and dislikes long-term waterlogging in the pot. To distinguish different species, you can start by observing leaf shape, crown form, and growth habits. By choosing varieties according to your own planting space and purpose, you can help cypresses grow healthily and beautifully.
