Jujube tree bark is the dried bark of the jujube tree, a plant in the Rhamnaceae family, and it is also a traditional Chinese medicinal herb that has been used for a long time. Jujube trees are cultivated in both northern and southern China, with the northern production areas being the most common; the trees are sturdy and the bark is relatively thick, providing a stable source for harvesting the medicinal material.

In terms of appearance, jujube tree bark mostly consists of strip-like or rolled pieces of bark. The outer surface is rough, grayish-brown to blackish-brown, with longitudinal cracks, while the inner surface is relatively smooth and lighter in color. The texture is tough, the fracture is slightly fibrous, the odor is faint, and the taste is bitter and astringent. Generally, bark that is thick, dry, and free of mold is considered the best.

In traditional applications, jujube tree bark is known for its astringent properties. In folk medicine it is often used to relieve symptoms such as diarrhea, chronic cough, and bleeding from external injuries. It is usually taken internally as a decoction, and for external use it can be ground into powder and applied. Its astringent effect is mostly related to the tannin compounds it contains. It should be noted that medicinal use must be guided by a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner based on syndrome differentiation, and it should not be taken blindly on one's own.

When harvesting jujube tree bark, vigorous mature plants should be selected, and part of the bark is usually stripped in spring and autumn. Avoid girdling too widely or too frequently, otherwise it is easy to weaken the tree's vigor and affect jujube fruit yield and the tree's lifespan. The stripped bark should be dried promptly and stored in a ventilated, dry place to prevent moisture and mold, so as to maintain its quality.
