Growing Habits of the Peace Lily and Its Container Care Methods
The peace lily is an evergreen herbaceous plant of the genus Spathiphyllum in the Araceae family, also known as white sail, white crane taro, or spathe taro. Its pure white spathe stands upright, shaped like a raised sail, and paired with its slender leaf stalks and glossy green leaves, it has high ornamental value, which is why it has been given the beautiful meaning of smooth sailing. It is native to tropical America and is now very common as a household container plant in China.
The peace lily likes a warm, humid, semi-shaded environment; it fears both direct strong light and cold. The suitable growing temperature is around twenty degrees, and in winter the room temperature should preferably stay above ten degrees, otherwise the leaves are prone to freezing and turning black. When air humidity is higher, the leaf color becomes glossier and more spread out.
For daily care, it can be placed by a window with scattered light or in a bright spot, taking care to provide shade in summer. Watering should follow the principle of watering when dry and letting it dry between waterings, keeping the potting soil slightly moist without waterlogging; long-term excessive moisture or drought can both easily damage the roots. During the growing season, apply light fertilizer frequently, and appropriately supplement phosphorus and potassium fertilizer before the flowering period, which can make more spathes emerge and their color whiter.
The peace lily has a graceful plant shape and good shade tolerance, and is often used for indoor greenery accents in living rooms, studies, and similar spaces; it also has some effect in absorbing harmful gases and regulating air humidity. It should be noted that its sap contains calcium oxalate, and accidental ingestion can cause oral discomfort, so households with young children or pets should place it out of easy reach. If the leaves turn yellow, it is mostly related to overwatering, overly strong light, or lack of fertilizer, and it can be adjusted according to the situation.
