Five-Color Crystal is a common variety name among Chinese cymbidiums, usually referring to orchids whose leaves carry crystal variegation and whose flowers are relatively richly colored. Crystal variegation is one type of orchid leaf variegation, shown when cells at the leaf tip, along the edges or in local areas mutate, the tissue thickening and becoming semi-transparent, glistening and translucent in the light and resembling crystal. Among traditional types such as Cymbidium goeringii, Cymbidium tortisepalum and Cymbidium sinense, there are related varieties sold on the strength of crystal variegation.

From an appreciation standpoint, the highlight of Five-Color Crystal orchids lies in the dual display of leaf variegation and flower color. The crystal areas form a striking contrast with the green leaf surface, and when the variegation pattern is clear it is quite elegant; the flowers may show combinations of red, yellow, white, purple and other colors, and some varieties also carry butterfly-like (diehua) features, giving even richer ornamental layering. Common Cymbidium goeringii and Cymbidium tortisepalum varieties such as Five-Color Crown and Five-Color Butterfly belong to this type that combines color and variegation.

In terms of care, the cell tissue of the crystal areas is relatively delicate and generally less tolerant of sun than ordinary green leaves, so in midsummer it should be shaded appropriately to prevent strong light from scorching leaf tips and variegation patches. Routine management should keep the potting medium loose and airy, water according to the principle of drying out between waterings, and fertilize lightly and thinly, so that fertilizer solution does not accumulate and damage roots and variegation. Crystal variegation may fade or be unstable, and stable light and care conditions help keep the variegation pattern clear.

It should also be noted that crystal-variegated orchids have many commercial names, and Five-Color Crystal may correspond to different specific varieties in different producing areas and types. When introducing plants, one should judge by the actual leaf variegation direction, flower color performance and the health of the plant, and avoid making judgments based only on names and photos; when necessary, refer to the related variety entries on this site for comparison.
