Five-Color Butterfly (a famous Spring Orchid cultivar), selected in 1983 by Zhu Shuiting of Lizhu, Shaoxing, at the Shaoxing flower market. This flower was dug up from Fusheng, Shaoxing. The plant type is tall, upright, with flowers facing straight up. The annual branches are long, and the internodes are also long. Medium-sized round leaves, hard in texture, relatively sparse, with edges curling upward, and the leaf surface is yellow-green. Strong growth vigor, with a high flowering rate.
The three outer petals are short and broad, with tightly held large round lips; the main petal and the holding petals have red radiating lines, and the color is emerald green.
The tips of the side petals turn backward, with the upper part emerald green and the lower part lip-transformed, and in the middle is a broad red line, forming clearly distinct green, red, and white colors, so it is also called the Three-Color Butterfly. The column is slightly yellow, and the flower scape is tall. The leaves are dark green and semi-pendant. Easy to propagate, and vigorous in flowering. Spring Orchid plum petal type, with rounded outer petal tips, contracted roots and broadened angles, the flower has mixed colors and is arranged in a "pin" character shape. The holding petals are emulsified into hard holds, with small round lips that curl slightly backward and have bright red spots on them; the flower shape is regular and the posture is elegant.
Five-Color Butterfly is a typical Spring Orchid species, a terrestrial orchid, with white, thick and strong roots, 0.5 cm-0.8 cm in diameter and 20-30 cm long, some reaching more than 50 cm, and the roots do not branch. The pseudobulb is relatively small, generally 0.8-1.2 cm high and 0.6-1.0 cm wide, forming an oval sphere. The leaves of Five-Color Butterfly are generally 5-8 blades, mostly 7 blades, rarely more than 8 blades; they are linear leaves, 40-50 cm long and 0.4-0.6 cm wide, with a few more than 0.7 cm, the leaf edges are serrated, and the cross-section at the leaf base is "v" shaped.
The flowering period is December to March, with 2-4 flowers per scape, flower diameter 5.5-6.0 cm, and varieties including red, yellow, light green, white, and solid-color forms, with a rich fragrance. The Five-Color Butterfly cultivar is easy to identify.
