An Introduction to the Characteristics of the Teselong Orchid Variety and How to Care for It
Teselong is a fairly popular cultivated variety among Chinese orchids (guolan), often seen at orchid shows and gatherings of orchid enthusiasts. As a member of the traditional orchid appreciation system, it draws attention for the harmony of its flower form, flower color and overall plant shape, and it is an orchid variety with strong ornamental appeal.
In appearance, this type of orchid plant usually has slender, gracefully arching leaves; when it blooms, the petal shapes are full of variation, the flower color is fresh and elegant, and it carries a subtle orchid fragrance. Chinese orchid appreciation values the combination of color, fragrance, form and charm, and Teselong is well regarded in these respects, which is why it has attracted quite a few orchid growers.
For care, Teselong has habits similar to most Chinese orchids: it likes a loose, airy, well-draining, slightly acidic growing medium, commonly planted with bark combined with granular substrate. Day to day, it is best placed in a spot with good ventilation and bright, indirect light; water according to the principle of letting the medium dry before watering again, and avoid standing water in the pot, which can cause root rot. During the peak growing season, apply light, frequent feedings; in summer, provide shade, and in winter, keep it warm.
There are many names for Chinese orchid varieties, so when acquiring plants it is advisable to carefully check the leaf and flower characteristics and to buy from reliable sources. Beginners can start with healthy, vigorous plants, and once they are familiar with the orchid's growth rhythm, they can gradually improve their care skills, making it easier to achieve the ideal blooming state.
