Dendrobium orchids are suitable for growing in pots at home; understanding their characteristics and care methods is key
Dendrobium is the collective name for plants in the genus Dendrobium of the orchid family (Orchidaceae). It is a typical epiphytic orchid, and in the wild it mostly grows attached to tree trunks or rocks. Its stems are jointed and upright, resembling slender pseudobulbs; the leaves are mostly leathery, and the flowers are borne on both sides of the stem nodes. Flower colors include purple-red, pink, white, yellow and many others; the flower shapes are elegant and the ornamental period is relatively long.
Common cultivated types can be divided into two major groups: spring dendrobiums and autumn dendrobiums. Spring dendrobiums mostly bloom in spring, with flower buds borne on the upper nodes of the previous year's stems; autumn dendrobiums, also known as the butterfly dendrobium type, mostly bloom in summer and autumn, have a longer flowering period, and are often used as cut flowers. Species such as Dendrobium officinale and Dendrobium nobile have stems that can be used as medicine, giving them both ornamental and medicinal value; among them, Dendrobium officinale is grown more often in the humid areas south of the Yangtze River.
In terms of care, dendrobiums prefer a warm, humid, semi-shaded environment and are averse to intense direct sun and waterlogging. For pot cultivation, choose loose, breathable media such as bark, sphagnum moss and tree-fern fiber to ensure good root aeration. During the growing season, keep the medium slightly moist and frequently spray water around the plant to raise humidity, while also paying attention to ventilation; supplementing appropriately with phosphorus and potassium fertilizer before and after flowering helps the flowers last longer.
Common problems in home growing are root rot and failure to bloom, mostly caused by overly frequent watering, insufficient light or poor ventilation; these can be avoided by controlling watering, increasing diffused light and improving ventilation. Dendrobium orchids have elegant flower forms and are suitable for placing in bright spots such as balconies and windowsills, where they can beautify the home; some species also have certain medicinal and health value.
