Dendrobium is the collective name for plants in the genus Dendrobium of the orchid family (Orchidaceae). Most are epiphytic orchids, and the number of native species is very large, making it a major genus within the orchid family. They are mostly distributed in tropical and subtropical regions and prefer warm, humid, semi-shaded growing environments. Whether in ornamental horticulture or traditional medicinal use, Dendrobium holds an important place, so understanding Dendrobium classification is very helpful for both growing and purchasing.

In terms of use, Dendrobium can be broadly divided into two directions: medicinal and ornamental. On the medicinal side, Dendrobium officinale, Dendrobium huoshanense, and Dendrobium nobile are relatively well known, and traditionally their stems are used as medicine. On the ornamental side, horticulture often divides Dendrobium by flowering period into spring Dendrobium types and autumn Dendrobium types; the former mostly bloom in spring, while the latter bloom summer and autumn, with rich flower colors, and are often used as potted flowers and cut flowers.

Among common varieties, Dendrobium officinale has slender stem nodes and a surface often tinged with rust color, making it a popular choice for home potting; Dendrobium nobile has stems shaped like a golden hairpin, with large and beautiful flowers; Dendrobium chrysotoxum has a stem swollen like a drumstick, and its flowers are mostly golden yellow; Dendrobium loddigesii, Dendrobium fimbriatum, and others also each have their own characteristics. When distinguishing these varieties, one can start with features such as stem form, thickness, flowering period, and flower color.

It should be noted that different Dendrobium species differ in their habits, with varying cold tolerance and light preference, so before introducing them, one should first clarify the variety's classification. For home growing, types such as Dendrobium officinale are relatively easy to manage; you can refer to potting methods and gradually gain experience, then adjust watering, light, and flowering-period management according to the variety's characteristics.
