Big Price Gaps in Podocarpus: Variety, Size and Shaping Are Key
Podocarpus (buddhist pine) is a common evergreen ornamental tree species, with an ancient, rugged tree form and leaves that stay green all year round. It can be used both for courtyard landscaping and for making bonsai. On the market, the price of podocarpus varies widely: ordinary small seedlings are relatively affordable, while tall trees with mature shaping or fine bonsai often cost far more, with some even reaching the tens of thousands of yuan range.
There are several main factors affecting the price of podocarpus. First, the variety: ordinary podocarpus is cheaper, while valuable varieties such as rice-leaf podocarpus, sparrow-tongue podocarpus, pearl podocarpus and island podocarpus are clearly more expensive; second, the size: the thicker the ground diameter, the taller the tree and the larger the crown spread, the higher the price usually is; third, the shaping: trees that have been pruned and wired for many years and have clearly defined tiers look better and carry higher added value; fourth, the tree's vigor: healthy plants with well-developed root systems and no pests or diseases are more welcome on the market.
When buying, it is advisable to first clarify the purpose. For landscaping, you can choose ordinary varieties of moderate size, which offer better value for money; for bonsai, you should focus on the variety, the trunk form and the basis of the shaping. Before buying, carefully check the condition of the leaves and roots, ask the seller clearly about the variety, size and origin, and it is best to look at several sellers to compare market prices, so as to avoid following the crowd blindly.
In addition, podocarpus symbolizes longevity and good fortune and has fairly high ornamental and landscaping value, but there is also speculation on the market, and some sellers artificially inflate the prices of scarce shaped specimens. When buying a tree, judge rationally, do not readily believe one-sided publicity, and simply choose a suitable plant based on your own needs and budget.
